Getting started
Everything you need to get reconYa running and keep it that way. reconYa is available first on macOS, so the steps below are for the Mac; Windows and Linux will follow. Can't find your answer? Get in touch.
Requirements
- macOS 13 Ventura or later, Apple Silicon or Intel. Windows and Linux will follow.
- A computer connected to the network you want to see, over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- No admin rights, no extra software.
Install and first launch
- Download the DMG from the download page, open it and drag reconYa to Applications.
- reconYa is not notarized by Apple yet, so the first launch of each downloaded version needs one confirmation: open the app, click Done on the warning, then go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
- When macOS asks to let reconYa find devices on your local network, click Allow.
Your first sweep
On first launch reconYa detects the network your computer is on and starts sweeping it straight away. Devices appear on the map as they answer; ports, vendors and hostnames fill in over the next minutes. Sweeps repeat every 30 seconds; Pause sweep stops them. To scan a different range, add it with New network (for example 192.168.1.0/24).
The first sweep is a baseline, so it doesn't raise a "new device" alert for every host. From then on, anything that appears on the network is flagged.
Local Network permission
Without it, macOS silently blocks reconYa from reaching other devices and every sweep comes back empty. If you clicked Don't Allow, turn it on in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network, then quit and reopen reconYa.
Trial and licence
- The first 14 days are a free trial with every feature. A badge in the top bar counts down.
- After the trial the console locks until you activate a licence. Scanning keeps running in the background and nothing is deleted.
- To activate, choose Activate license from the user menu (or use the lock screen), paste the key from your purchase email and press Activate. reconYa checks the key with Polar once, then works offline.
- Your licence, its update window and any renewal are shown in Settings > License.
Moving to a new computer
A licence is active on one computer at a time. On the old one, open Settings > License and remove the licence; that frees it. Then activate the same key on the new one. Old computer already gone? Release the activation yourself in the Polar customer portal (linked in your purchase email), or email us and we will do it.
Updates
- New versions are announced in the changelog and on the Discord.
- To update, download the new DMG and replace the app in Applications. Your data and licence stay where they are.
- Your licence covers releases from the 12 months after purchase. If a newer version shows the lock screen with a renewal message, renew or install the newest version from inside your year from the version list.
Where your data lives
On macOS, everything is in ~/Library/Application Support/reconya/: the database, logs and your licence. Back up that folder to keep your history; copy it to a new computer to bring it along.
Uninstalling
Remove the licence first if you want to use it elsewhere, then:
rm -rf /Applications/reconYa.app
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/reconya
Troubleshooting
- No devices found: check the Local Network permission above, make sure the subnet matches your network (System Settings > Network shows your IP), and pause any VPN that routes local traffic.
- "reconYa can't be opened": follow the Open Anyway step under Install. It is needed again after each new download.
- Activation fails: paste the whole key including
RECONYA-, check that the computer is online, and if the key is already active on another computer, remove it there first.
- Anything else: email us with the log file from
~/Library/Application Support/reconya/reconya.log attached.
